Love Island Nigeria coming as dating show branches out

‘Love Island Nigeria’ has been confirmed.

The ITV2 franchise has been branching out, with ‘Love Island USA’ – which is currently airing its second season – delighting fans after its official launch on CBS last year.

Now, Metro.co.uk has revealed bosses have sealed deals for two new editions of the popular dating show.

It’s said ITV Studios will work Boomerang on a Spanish version, while the programme is also coming to an African audience with the launch of Nigerian network Digital Play’s own series based on the beloved format.

The planned summer series in the UK was unfortunately cancelled this year due to the pandemic, but ITV boss Kevin Lygo had already teased the possibility of more international editions.

Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival while discussing plans for 2021, he explained: "It’s a really important show and a wonderful show.

"I think we took the decision with a heavy heart to cancel the winter series. In the summer, look, it’s a long way away and so we hope we’ll be there [in Majorca].

"They are shooting it now in America [‘Love Island USA’], they’re doing it in Las Vegas… there are ways, you know, you isolate people beforehand, so at this stage it is still a long way away and we will proceed along the basis that we are going to do it.

"If we don’t do it in Majorca, maybe we’ll have to think with like ‘I’m A Celebrity’, we’ll find a new place to do it or something. We need it and we are assuming it will return."

This comes after ITV’s ‘I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!’ has moved location from Australia to North Wales for this year’s series.

It was announced earlier this year that the 2020 ‘Love Island’ summer series would be cancelled due to Covid-19, and it means ITV bosses have another year to prepare for a new season.
