Jameela Jamil: Surviving suicide is the ‘most extraordinary gift’

Jameela Jamil says surviving her suicide attempt has been "the most extraordinary gift."

The 34-year-old actress and model took to Instagram on Thursday (10.09.20) to mark World Suicide Prevention Day, where she said she’s grateful she survived her attempt to take her own life seven years ago, as she can now use her platform to encourage others to "hang on".

She wrote on social media: "Surviving suicide has been the most extraordinary gift to me in being able to still be here and remind the people I love that sometimes it’s just a particularly overwhelming hour, day, week, or month. And that it can and normally will pass, and that with even small incremental changes and reaching out to even just one person for help, life really can get better.

"Please hang on."

Jameela previously spoke about her suicide attempt last year, when she marked World Mental Health Day.

She wrote on Twitter at the time: "Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay. This month, 6 years ago, I tried to take my own life. I’m so lucky that I survived, and went on to use EMDR to treat my severe PTSD.

"I urge you to hang on just a bit longer and ask for help if you need it. Because things can turn around. I promise. (sic)"

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing therapy, an interactive psychotherapy technique used to relieve psychological stress.

The ‘Good Place’ star went on to urge people to speak out in order to remove the stigma around mental health problems.

She added in a second tweet: "There is so much work to do in Improving awareness and mental health care, and we need to further de-stigmatise the conversation around asking for help. While you’re gathering the strength, I recommend the work of @matthaig1 @Ayishat_Akanbi and @scarcurtis ALL my love to you. (sic)"
