Doctor Who fans could be waiting until 2022 for new series

‘Doctor Who’ fans could reportedly be waiting until 2022 for a new series.

Filming for Jodie Whittaker’s next run as the titular Time Lord is set to get underway next month, but it’s said there’s a chance coronavirus safety regulations could mean a big delay for the cast and crew.

A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "Shooting safely is a slow process.

"If there is a series finished and ready to go next year it will be nothing short of a miracle. And it’s going to cost a fortune."

It’s said scenes could take twice as long to film, while the last series took 11 months to shoot.

However, a BBC insider added to the publication: "Filming is going ahead as planned and we remain hopeful that the next series will air in 2021."

Regardless of any uncertainty surrounding the upcoming season, fans can still look forward to show’s festive special as the episode has already been completed.

Mandip Gill – who plays companion Yasmin Khan – previously revealed: "I can confirm that [it’s already been shot]… There is a festive episode.

"We happened to be quite lucky and fit it in, so that will be exciting."

Showrunner Chris Chibnall had also updated fans and explained the crew were working from home to keep things on track.

He said: "Post-production continues on ‘Revolution of the Daleks’.

"Our brilliant teams are working remotely on the visual effects shots and sending them in.

"Nothing brightens a day like a new FX shot in your inbox, no matter how early the stage it’s at."

The episode could be an emotional one for fans after reports Bradley Walsh (Graham) and Tosin Cole (Ryan) are set to leave.

An insider previously said: "Two years is a long time in the world of ‘Doctor Who’. Yaz will be back but Christmas will be the last outing for Ryan and Graham."
