Duchess of York spending time with cancer patients

Britain’s Duchess of York is spending time with cancer patients to learn more about the disease.

Sarah Ferguson was the keynote speaker at The Scarborough Hospital Foundation’s second annual Scarborough World Gala on Saturday (10.05.14), which helped raise $2 million for the hospital’s Cancer Care program.

She puts her involvement down to the work of the younger royals and having people close to her battle the disease.

She told ET Canada: "Prince George is a little young to talk at the moment, but the whole of the young royals – William and Harry, you know, all of them – they are a united front for good, and I think they really are a great example of how we can nurture our youth of today for a better tomorrow.

"So many of my own family members have died of cancer so I thought this would be a great way of supporting Scarborough Hospital which does so much. I really spend a great deal of time with patients who suffer from cancer and various other diseases in order to learn more and the more I learn the more I realise that everyday’s a blessing and I’m so lucky."

Sarah – who has daughters Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie with Prince Andrew – has worked closely with a number of charities in the past.

She was appointed patron of The Teenage Cancer Trust in 1990, she was a founding supporter of The American Cancer Society’s Great American Weigh In which is a campaign that raises awareness of the link between excess weight and cancer.
