Victoria Derbyshire prepared husband to raise their kids alone

Victoria Derbyshire prepared her husband to raise their children alone amid her cancer fight.

The 51-year-old TV presenter – who has sons Oliver and Joe with Mark Sandell – has recalled the moment she readied her husband to raise their kids on his own, fearing her cancer had spread to other parts of her body.

During the BBC One special ‘Dear NHS Superstars’, Victoria – who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 – shared: "When I was 46 I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

"The overriding concern was, ‘Oh my god, am I going to die?’ "

The TV presenter underwent a right-sided mastectomy, but generally remained upbeat about her health situation at the time.

However, after suffering some dizzy spells and undergoing more tests, Victoria noticed her radiologist’s mood changing.

She said: "The atmosphere in the room changed. He looked at me and said, ‘I think we may need to do a CT scan on your body and brain’.

"I thought, ‘OK, it’s spread. It’s spread to my brain. That’s it. There is no hope. That’s it’.

"Got home, and I said to Mark, ‘You might have to bring up the boys on your own.’ "

But following more checks, Victoria was informed that the cancer hadn’t spread any further.

The newsreader – who married Mark in the autumn of 2018 – described the situation as a "triumph" amid a "really dark time" in her life.

Recalling her reaction to the diagnosis, Victoria – who ended her chemotherapy in 2016 – said: "It was like a moment of victory or triumph. I still had cancer. It was a moment of joy, in the middle of a really dark time."
