Kym Marsh relates to Kate Garraway’s GMB return after ex-Corrie star lost son

Kym Marsh understands Kate Garraway’s decision to return to ‘Good Morning Britain’, after her mum convinced her to go back to work on ‘Coronation Street’ just 10 days after her son’s funeral.

The former cobbles actress tragically lost her son Archie when he died in 2009, just minutes after he was born 18 weeks prematurely, and the star has now revealed she "didn’t’ want to go back" to work, but her mother convinced her and she now accepts it was "a good decision".

Speaking about Kate – who returned to ‘GMB’ this week after three months away when her husband Derek Draper, who is still in hospital, fell ill with coronavirus – Kym said: "I understand Kate’s decision to throw herself back into work.

"When my son Archie died, I went back to ‘Coronation Street’ 10 days after his funeral.

"I was in the middle of a storyline and understandably, the soap needed me.

"I didn’t want to go back, but my mum convinced me it was a good decision.

"I was in a bleak place and she knew I needed to focus my mind elsewhere. She was right.

"Life sadly does go on and when you’re at work, you’re often surrounded by people who can support you."

Kym is now hoping Kate will "find comfort" by being back at work while Derek – who is now Covid-free – still fights for his life in hospital.

Writing in her OK! magazine column, she added: "I hope Kate can find comfort in being back in the studio with people she loves while Derek starts the process of recovery."

Kym – who played Michelle Connor on ‘Corrie’ – recently called for NHS staff to receive a pay rise amid the coronavirus crisis, after the service helped her through "tough times".

She said: "A lot of people working in the NHS are on very low wages and, as a country, we need to address that.

"There are people, like sporting stars and people on TV, who are on huge salaries. I don’t begrudge people earning money but we must reward people who put their lives on the line for us.

"I’ve always been a proud supporter of the NHS. They have helped me and my family through so many tough times."
