Kate Garraway told ‘6 times’ her husband ‘won’t make it’

Kate Garraway has been told by doctors six times that her husband Derek Draper is "not going to make it", and she admitted their kids have "effectively lost their dad".

The ‘Good Morning Britain’ co-host returned to the show as a guest earlier today (08.07.20) to update fans on her husband’s condition while he battles serious illness in hospital – after he was first admitted with coronavirus, which he is now free of – and she told how it’s tough for doctors because the disease is still new.

Speaking to ‘GMB’ co-presenters Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, she said: "Six times they’ve said he’s not going to make it.

"The problem is, is that it’s a new disease which nobody knows. There is no data."

Kate – who confirmed she is returning to co-host ‘GMB’ on Monday (13.07.20) alongside Ben Shephard – admitted her and Derek’s children, daughter Darcey, 14, and 10-year-old son Billy, have effectively "lost" him.

She said: "For Darcey and Billy right now, effectively they’ve lost their dad.

"He’s not there but he is a presence in their lives."

Derek was taken ill with coronavirus 100 days ago, and Kate has admitted each stage has been "a new terror".

She said: "I think there’s been so many different stages. When he went into hospital I brought my phone to the studio. I’ve got some texts on my phone from him saying, ‘They’ve said I’m not going to die, I’m doing better, show this to the children and tell them I’m doing great.’

"There was this feeling of terror because he had Covid and then suddenly it escalated and it was all about his lungs, and then it became evident it was kidneys, lungs, heart, everything.

"Each stage has been a new terror and just when I thought we were moving forward, we now know it can affect everywhere – nerves, everything.

"I think we’ve seen that, there’s been a couple of cases where a professor had lapses in concentration … I don’t want to scare people because there are people who will be absolutely fine, but there’s a huge post-viral syndrome of the damage people will suffer."But Kate has insisted she will "never give up" on her husband.

She said: "We will never give up. I know the NHS and the doctors will never give up. We’ll keep on fighting for him."
