Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker praises Jo Martin’s ‘vibrant’ Time Lord

Jodie Whittaker has praised Jo Martin’s "powerful" performance on ‘Doctor Who’.

The 38-year-old actress – who made her debut as the titular Time Lord back in 2017 before starring in her first full series the following year – joined Matt Smith and David Tennant for a discussion about the BBC sci-fi show, and she praised her co-star’s debut as another iteration of the iconic character during this year’s 12th series.

Speaking to the former Doctors on HBO Max, she said: "Working opposite Jo and seeing how exciting and vibrant and powerful her Doctor was, to me, it needed no explanation."

It is unclear where Jo’s version of the Doctor fits in with show history, but fans speculated it is somewhere between Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee’s second and third Time Lords because she didn’t recognise the sonic screwdriver, but did have a police box TARDIS.

Showrunner Chris Chibnall previously teased fans will have to "wait and see" to get some answers to their questions.

He hinted: "We’ll have to wait and see. You will get answers to some of these mysteries this series. As ever with Doctor Who, answers often reveal new questions. But it’s all very deliberate."

Meanwhile, David – who starred on the BBC sci-fi show from 2005 to 2010 – suggested being on the programme was his defining career moment.

Speaking this week, he told Matt and Jodie: "When you realise it’s your turn, you do know what that means in terms of a loss of anonymity and the fact that the first line of your obituary has almost certainly been written.

"But it’s a huge privilege and also feels very precious, because people love it so much and carry it with them throughout their lives.

"To be the custodian of that, you just don’t want to break it."

Although it doesn’t seem that Jo will be the one to succeed Jodie in the famous role, the latter did have some advice for whoever is the next one to step into the TARDIS.

She said: "The thing that I would say to the next person is… the pressure of the history of the show is totally made up in your own head.

"On set, all the crew that have transitioned, they’re kind of excited with you to bring something new because that is the beauty of this as a role."
