Maya Jama set for Strictly Come Dancing?

Maya Jama could be set for ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ after quitting her BBC Radio 1 show.

Although the 25-year-old star previously laughed off reports linking her to the upcoming series of the dance competition, insiders believe that stepping away from her weekend radio show will free up Maya’s schedule and allow her to compete on ‘Strictly’.

A source told The Sun Online: "Maya ticks a lot of boxes for the show. She’s great fun, has a massive following, especially among young people and, of course, she can dance.

"A lot of those taking part juggle other work but for Maya combining Strictly with a weekend slot on the radio would have been impossible.

"Producers hope her decision to leave the radio show will mean she is up for the idea of a place on ‘Strictly’.

"At the moment the show is putting the final touches to how the programme is going to look. There will need to be a lot of changes due to coronavirus and those taking part are asking for assurances as to how they will be kept safe and well which the show are of course going to give.

"Those taking part are likely to get a detailed report, which they may have to sign, setting out the rules for staying safe."

Meanwhile, Maya recently shocked fans after revealing she had made the "very difficult decision" to leave BBC Radio 1, where she had been presenting shows on Friday and Saturday mornings since she joined the company in 2018.

She wrote on Instagram: "My loveess … I’ve made the very difficult decision not to continue my Radio 1 contract from June, As you know I have been juggling & There are a lot of exciting commitments happening that would mean I’m not able to dedicate the time needed to my weekly radio show. I’ve loved every moment of my time at Radio 1 and I would like to thank the team for their hard work and friendship during the last two years. It’s been a JOURNEY, Thanks to all you cuties that tuned into the show every weekend, it was so great to hear that we have been getting the largest proportion of under 35s tuning in for our on-demand show on BBC Sounds. So we are going out with a bang! Love youuuuu listeners (sic)"

Lorna Clarke, BBC Controller of Popular Music, added of Maya’s : "We’d like to thank Maya for all her commitment and hard work at Radio One, and we wish her all the very best with her future."
