Charlie Brooker says Piers Morgan is ‘a bit of a hero’

Charlie Brooker thinks Piers Morgan has been "a bit of a hero" amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The 49-year-old screenwriter has praised the 55-year-old TV presenter for being outspoken during the health crisis, and Charlie thinks it’s "refreshing" that Piers doesn’t appear to have any qualms about being so widely disliked.
Charlie said: "He’s an odd fish, isn’t he? Because he obviously thrives on antagonising people, and so when he’s antagonising the right people from whatever your viewpoint then he’s a bit of a hero.
"I suppose in some ways it’s refreshing because he does seem to actually relish being disliked by half the population at any given time."
Charlie has spent his time amid the coronavirus lockdown writing his ‘Antiviral Wipe’ and binge-watching ‘MasterChef’.
Asked about his strange lockdown viewing habits, the comedy star – who is married to TV presenter Konnie Huq – told GQ magazine: "Well, I did watch all of ‘MasterChef’.
"When we were doing this show, in the first week I nearly killed myself – not in a suicidal way, I should add.
"I had a pull-up bar and I fell from it and hit my head really hard and had concussion for over a week and couldn’t really think properly. And so during that time I finished ‘MasterChef’.
"There’s something reassuring about watching ‘MasterChef’, because after you’ve watched it for a while it’s all the same.
"’Oooh, well, she’s mixing carrots and beetroot, could be awful, could be great! Or: salmon and wool! Salmon and wool! It’s a classic combination, but that salmon is going to make that wool very wet.’
"Though, weirdly, in lockdown, you watch that and the fact that they’re eating off the same plate and hugging each other becomes very disturbing."
