Laura Whitmore says ‘Love Island’ received "more applications" than ever before it was postponed.
The planned summer edition of ITV2’s hit dating show has been put back until next year, and the programme’s host has promised a real return to form in 2021.
Following the announcement, she tweeted: "Like with a lot of things because of restrictions with travel, social distancing and unable to plan ahead, ‘Love Island’ is postponed until 2021.
"Great news is that there have been more applications then any other series! Next year is going to be BIG. Stay safe"
Her comments come after ITV bosses decided it wouldn’t be safe for the show to go ahead and they wouldn’t be able to guarantee contestants’ safety during the coronavirus pandemic.
The channel’s director of television Kevin Lygo said: "We have tried every which way to make ‘Love Island’ this summer but logistically it’s just not possible to produce it in a way that safeguards the wellbeing of everyone involved and that for us is the priority.
"In normal circumstances we would be preparing very soon to travel out to the location in Mallorca to get the villa ready but clearly that’s now out of the question.
"We are very sorry for fans of the show but making it safely is our prime concern and ‘Love Island’ will be back stronger than ever in 2021."
Meanwhile, it is said that preparations for the axed summer show will be deferred to the winter version at the start of next year.
A source added: "Everything will be deferred to the winter version and everyone who was being lined up to appear in this series will be asked to see if they can appear in that series."
