Martin Kemp ‘couldn’t work out’ why EastEnders’ Linda not saved

Martin Kemp "couldn’t work out" why EastEnders’ Mick Carter didn’t save wife Linda Carter on Monday night’s (17.02.20) dramatic episode.
The former Albert Square regular – who played Steve Owen on the BBC One soap from 1998 until the character’s death in 2002 – loved watching the the nail-biting conclusion to the show’s first episode of their 35th anniversary week, which saw Linda (Kellie Bright) trapped on a sinking boat, with the water rising.
While Mick (Danny Dyer) attempted to save her, she still had her foot stuck as the doof doofs began and the credits started rolling, with viewers left in the dark about her fate – but Martin thought the Queen Vic landlord should’ve used a bit of his strength to pull his wife free.
Martin said: "The Titanic moment. Yeah I watched it the other night. ‘No love no, get your foot out, you’re stuck! I’m never gonna leave ya!’
"As they were going down and the water was coming up … I couldn’t work out why he wasn’t pulling the top [of the shelf] and bashing it open!"
But Martin also praised the effort the soap went to for the thrilling scenes.
Speaking to The Sun Online, he added: "It was a good moment and they’ve gone to a lot of trouble, EastEnders, to go down and film in Shepperton tank, that they shot it in.
"And I love seeing ‘EastEnders’ put effort into it because that’s when it’s at its best."
Martin’s comments come after Danny said ‘EastEnders’ have taken soaps "to a new level" with the soap’s special anniversary episodes this week, and he wishes the show could "stay at this level every episode".
He said: "It’s real shock who goes, I’m telling you.
"I think we’ve taken the soap thing to a new level. Every ep starts at the disaster and we jump back seven hours earlier and then it’s four different characters and their routes to being on the boat, and why they’re there and what their storyline is.
"It’s very clever. We’re very proud of it.
"We knew we were doing something special. It’s really inspiring. I wish we could stay at this level every ep."
