Katie McGlynn suggested Corrie character be killed off

Katie McGlynn pushed for her character on ‘Coronation Street’ to die of cervical cancer when the producers suggested the story line to her.
The 26-year-old actress made the suggestion that her alter ego Sinead Tinker lose her battle with the illness because the reality is that although some women will survive the disease many will not have a happy ending and Katie wanted to "portray the truth that does happen".
Speaking to ‘The Six O’Clock Show’ on Virgin Media One, Katie said: "Because cancer is real it touches so many people out there, you know, it triggers so many emotions with people.
"Life isn’t a fairy tale, and, I’m not sick of television shows or soaps doing the fairy tale ending that’s not real, I’m not saying that, I just wanted us to portray the truth that does happen. I mean I know people do get cured and that’s amazing but some people don’t, and I just wanted to showcase that and, like, wave it in your face, you know. Go for your smears. This does happen to young people, young families, women. I like this story line because it’s like an umbrella of so many different things at once."
"Some women sat there, that are going through the same thing that Sinead’s going through and be watching it going, ‘Oh, that’s right, Sinead’s cured, I’m not.’ I just thought, ‘No, I wanna try and make some kind of difference,’ but the response that we have had, I’m just overwhelmed by it."
Katie’s final scenes as Sinead will air on the ITV soap next week and although she is sad about waving goodbye to the cobbles of Weatherfield forever she is excited about taking on new roles.
The former ‘Waterloo Road’ star said: "It’s bittersweet really. I’m sad to be leaving all the people there and the character. I didn’t quite expect the effect that it would have on me watching Sinead die. So it’s very sad to be leaving the character but at the same time, I’m very excited to see what’s out there. I’m still quite young-ish.
"I’m a bit of a risk taker. I think if I hadn’t of taken this risk, I never would of done. So yeah, I’m excited about that."
