David Walliams to present National Television Awards

David Walliams is to replace Dermot O’Leary as host of the National Television Awards (NTAs).
The ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ judge has been signed up by ceremony bosses for their 25th anniversary event in January and joked that, after previously being named Best TV Judge in 2015, 2018 and again this year, he’s planning to make it a memorable night by also taking home some of the statuettes.
He said:"I am thrilled to be the new host of the NTAs — and will ensure I also win them all."
The 48-year-old author was chosen to replace Dermot – who has stepped down after hosting the ceremony every year since 2010 – because of his universal appeal.
A source told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre TV column: "It might be a little bit awkward if he wins the award again in 2020, but David’s huge popularity is what makes him the perfect choice as presenter.
"He’s one of those celebrities who is liked by everyone, from children to grannies, and can always be expected to keep audiences in stitches throughout the night."
Dermot confirmed in February he wouldn’t be returning to host the awards show.
In a statement shared on Instagram and Twitter, he said: "After 10 years of proudly hosting the National Television Awards, I have decided it’s time to step down as host.
"It’s been a tough decision because we have had a ball over the last decade, but 10 years feels about right.
"I would like to thank Indigo and my ITV family for a brilliant ten years and look forward to proudly passing on the baton in 2020… and a holiday in January!"
The announcement came after the ‘X Factor’ host had joked he would call time on his run hosting the show if Geordie duo Ant & Dec claimed their 18th consecutive prize in the Best TV Presenter category.
He quipped: "If they win it, having not been on television, we may as well just chuck in the towel."
Dec Donnelly laughed at the pair’s pal’s comment during their acceptance speech, as he teased: "Special mention to Dermot who said he was going to chuck the towel in if we won this year so … happy retirement Dermot!"
