Prince Harry’s moniker has been trademarked by a clothing company in China.
The 29-year-old royal could see his name printed on a string of products including underwear, watches and jewellery, after a firm called Yiwu Novo Clothing Company Limited recently registered his name as a brand which is valid until 2023.
Whilst Harry, his brother William and the rest of the royal family have taken legal action to protect their moniker’s and image rights in the UK and Europe, these rights do not apply to the rest of the world.
According to the Daily Mail newspaper, a spokeswoman for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills – which regulates trademarks in Britain – says Harry will have issues stopping their names being used unless he registers a company in China.
Stopping the products from being imported into the UK also proves problematic because the use of the names could be described as decoration rather than branding which is protected under the Prince’s image rights.
The Duke of Cambridge has already seen his name registered for use on strange products such as extractor hoods and microwave ovens, while the name ‘Prince George’ was registered in 2003 for a company producing wood pulp and chemicals.
