Coronation Street bosses ‘tell big stars to take pay cut’

‘Coronation Street’ bosses are said to have told some of their more experienced stars to take a pay cut.
Cobbles veterans such as Bill Roache – who has played Ken Barlow since the first-ever ‘Corrie’ episode in December 1960 – and Barbara Knox (Rita Sullivan), who reportedly earn around £250,000 a year, are expected to be affected as show bosses look to "even things out" in comparison to some of the younger stars.
An ITV source told The Sun newspaper: "Bosses have made it clear that the older deals are no longer in line with some of the younger stars. In some cases, less-paid actors are on screen a lot more than the others.
"Some of the old guard get massive pay irrespective of how much they actually work.
"Some even have deals which guarantee wage hikes every year – but these are also going now."
It is claimed the changes will be made to some of the contracts when deals come up for negotiation, which tends to be on a yearly basis.
The source added: "Obviously this hasn’t gone down particularly well with those hit.
"But rocking the boat comes with the fear of falling out of favour – and being written out."
A ‘Coronation Street’ spokeswoman said: "We do not comment on staff contracts."
Sue Nicholls (Audrey Roberts), Sally Dynevor (Sally Metcalfe), Simon Gregson (Steve McDonald) and Helen Worth (Gail Platt) could also be affected.
This comes just months after it was revealed Alan Halsall, Julia Goulding and James Burrows have all put pen to paper on new ‘Corrie’ contracts.
Speaking last October, James exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "I can say I’ve just signed a new contract so I’m not going anywhere just yet. With regards to the storyline, I have no clue.
"I’m happy, it’s a great place to work, there are some great people there. It’s good fun."
