Prince William and Duchess Catherine visit Uluru

Britain’s Prince William and Duchess Catherine visited Uluru Kata-Tjuta National Park in Australia today (22.04.14).

The couple followed in the footsteps of William’s parents, Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, who were the last royal couple visited the country’s most iconic natural landmark, Uluru, in 1983.

The popular attraction stands at 1,142-foot tall and has a circumference of 5.8 miles.

Uluru is a sacred site to the indigenous people of Australia and is cared for by the Anangu.

The royal couple were given a tour around Uluru by two local men, including Anangu man Sammy Wilson.

He told Australia’s ABC News: "When you’re visiting some sort of place, visit Uluru and we can tell the story about Uluru."

In addition to visiting the famous rock, the couple visited the National Indigenous Training Academy, which provides training for the hospitality and tourism industries.

They were then treated to a performance to a traditional aboriginal dance and enjoyed afternoon tea.

Later, the couple will experience outback camping as they set up camp for the night at a luxury site facing Uluru.
