Denise Welch loved Theresa May-loving character

Denise Welch was "completely sold" on her ‘Different For Girls’ role when she found out she would be playing a "later life lesbian who fancies Theresa May".
The former ‘Waterloo Road’ actress couldn’t wait to get started on the part when she was told her alter-ego, Mauve, would have the hots for the British Prime Minster, and thinks Dame Judi Dench would’ve "struggled" to portray such a character.
She said: "I loved it. Listen, I’m such a friend of the gays, I might as well be a lesbian. A dykon, they call me.
"When they said, ‘Would you play this LLL – later life lesbian – who realises she fancies Theresa May?’ I was completely sold.
"Even Judi Dench would struggle with that one. I thought, if there’s a challenge ever to be had, it’s to play a lesbian who fancies Theresa May."
While Denise joked she hasn’t met any women who fancy the British PM, she thinks the show might lead to women admitting they are romantically interested in Theresa "in their droves".
She said: "But I bet when this comes out, they’ll be coming out of the closet in droves."
Denise had to film a same-sex kiss for the drama series – which also stars Rachel Shelley and Victoria Broom – and she admitted the smooch felt "too familiar" to be her first ever.
She added to DIVA magazine: "It was very enjoyable, thank you very much! I had a great time.
"When I did it I thought, ‘I don’t think this is my first. It seems far too familiar.’ "
