Shailene Woodley conquered fear of heights for Divergent

Shailene Woodley’s fear of heights fuelled her to be more daring.

The 22-year-old actress climbed to the top of a giant Ferris wheel in new movie ‘Divergent’ despite being scared of heights, and she says she has a "sick addiction" to challenging her fears, just like her alter-ego Tris.

She explained: "One of my biggest fears is heights. I love it, though – it’s like a sick addiction. I’m so afraid of heights but I love pushing myself and going higher and higher, and getting sweatier and more nervous. It’s weird."

Shailene says the Ferris wheel scene was particularly challenging, because it was shot in ice cold temperatures in Chicago, but she actually enjoyed the experience.

She recalled: "It was freezing! It was really fun, we started at 8pm at night and there was a giant harvest moon going across the sky, and we were climbing up and down for hours and hours. We got to see the sunset and the sunrise. It was really magical."

The young starlet was eager to do her own stunts in the film to fully experience the nature of the action genre.

She added in an interview with SFX magazine: "I did as many stunts as the insurance would allow. It was exciting because I’ve never done an action film before, so to incorporate physicalities into an emotional human storyline was a new adventure."
