Sherrie Hewson says Coronation Street glory days are in the past

Sherrie Hewson thinks Coronation Street’s "glory days" are long gone.
The 67-year-old actress portrayed Maureen Webster from 1993 to 1997, and believes the ITV soap was at its best at the time when the programme only aired three episodes a week and mixed "heavy duty drama with comedy".
She said: "With all respect to everyone who’s been in ‘Corrie’, I think I was there in the glory days.
"We only did three episodes a week and there was the most amazing juxtaposition of heavy duty drama with comedy."
Sherrie – who made a brief return to the show in 2006 – has admitted she had a "wonderful" time appearing on the soap during the 90s.
She added to Waitrose Weekend magazine: "It was a wonderful time for me."
While ‘Corrie’ now airs six times a week instead of three when the ‘Benidorm’ star was on the cobbles previously, the former ‘Emmerdale’ star recently admitted she would be keen to re-appear in Weatherfield if the storyline "was right".
She said: "I’d return if the storyline was right. Maybe she could have a fling with Ken Barlow."
In 2016, Sherrie admitted she would love to see her former supermarket worker character hook up with Ken’s (Bill Roache) son Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne).
She said at the time: "I don’t think the character finished. I think she could go back. But I’d like her to go back harder as she was a bit of a wimp.
"She could go back and be really strong and I don’t know, throw Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) out of the garage. Or have an affair with Chris Gascoyne – I know I’m too old for Chris Gascoyne – but I just love him. You never know."
Maureen was back on our screens in 2006 alongside her husband Bill Webster (Peter Armitage) only to discover he had embarked on an affair with Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls).
Upon finding out the news, Maureen headed back to Germany.
