Lorde’s Grammy snub

Lorde reportedly pulled out of performing at the Grammy Awards after being declined a solo spot.
The ‘Royals’ hitmaker was reportedly the only Album of the Year nominee not to be offered the chance to take centre stage alone at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Sunday (28.01.18), and instead was asked to team up with other artists.
One source told Variety she was initially approached to be a part of a tribute to the late Tom Petty, for a performance featuring his song ‘American Girl’, but she declined to be involved.
Instead, the memorial tribute saw Chris Stapleton and Emmylou Harris perform ‘Wildflowers’.
The insider explained how all the other Album of the Year contenders – who were all male – were instead offered solo spots performing songs from their nominated LPs.
The news comes a week after the 21-year-old singer’s mother, Sonja Yelich, tweeted a photo of a New York Times article, which had been circled and read: "Of the 899 people to be nominated for Grammy awards in the past six years, only nine per cent were women."
She captioned the image: "this says it all (sic)"
Despite her musical snub, Lorde was still in attendance for the ceremony and showed her support for the Time’s Up anti-harassment initiative by pinning a quote from Jenny Holzer’s ‘Inflammatory Essays’ to the back of her red dress.
She shared an image of the notelet on Instagram and wrote: "My version of a white rose — THE APOCALYPSE WILL BLOSSOM — an excerpt from the greatest of all time, jenny holzer (sic)"
The quote read: "Rejoice! Our times are intolerable.
"Take courage, for the worst is a harbinger of the best.
"Only dire circumstance can precipitate the overthrow of oppressors.
"The old and corrupt must be laid to waste before the just can triumph.
"Contradiction will be heightened, the reckoning will be hastened by the staging of seed disturbances.
"The apocalypse will blossom."
