America Ferrera doesn’t want to name her baby after "a land mass or an idea."
The ‘Ugly Betty’ star is expecting her first child with her director husband Ryan Piers Williams and, although she doesn’t know what sex the tiny tot is yet, she’s already decided that she wants to give her son or daughter a normal moniker because she doesn’t want the youngster to face criticism – like she did – while growing up.
Speaking on the ‘Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ on Wednesday (03.01.18), she said: "I don’t want my child to be named after a land mass or idea. I love my name now but growing up with the name America is not easy. I don’t want to put that on my child because I know what that feels like so I’m going to go with something that is more a name."
And, although she’s over the moon that she’s expecting, the 33-year-old actress struggled on New Year’s Eve because she was forced to remain "stone cold sober" – but she’s so grateful that Ryan threw her a special party in their apartment.
She explained: "I feel good, I feel really good, aside from a completely sober New Year’s Eve. But my dear husband built me a club in the apartment which just means he got lights and a fog machine. I was stone cold sober so it just felt like a junior high party. Everyone else was having a great time."
America and Ryan proudly announced that they are expecting their first child as they celebrated the start of the New Year.
America posted a picture of the pair wearing 2018-shaped glasses and holding up a Babygro which reads, "Más besos (por favor)" which means, "More kisses please."
She captioned the picture: "We’re welcoming one more face to kiss in 2018! Wishing you #MásBesos in the New Year! #babybesos#HappyNewYear (sic)"
Ryan also posted the same picture on his social media account , writing: "Making room for new and beautiful things to come in 2018! #happynewyear (sic)"
America was born in Los Angeles to Honduran parents and speaks both Spanish and English.
The ‘Superstore’ star first met Ryan, 36, when he cast her in a student film and they married in 2011.
