Adam Driver almost snubbed Star Wars role

Adam Driver was initially reluctant to join the ‘Star Wars’ saga.
The 34-year-old actor stars as villain Kylo Ren in ‘The Force Awakens’ – helmed by J.J. Abrams – and will reprise his role in Rian Johnson’s ‘The Last Jedi’ movie this December.
Driver wasn’t sure he wanted to be part of such a huge blockbuster franchise as he is "sceptical of Hollywood movies" but was convinced after reading Abrams’ pitch and realising that his character – the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa – was very much a conflicted individual.
Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine, Driver said: "I’m always sceptical of Hollywood movies because they’re mostly just too broad. Everything about him [Kylo Ren] from the outside is designed to project the image that he’s assured. Only in private can he acknowledge how un-figured-out he is … how weak."
Driver also made a case as to why he thinks his ‘Star Wars’ alter ego isn’t a straightforward villain.
Kylo Ren is a commander of the First Order, the organisation which is spawned from the remains of the defeated Galatic Empire.
And Driver insists the destruction of the Death Star space station in the original trilogy by the Rebellion can be viewed as an "act of terrorism" from a certain viewpoint.
He said: "It’s not like people weren’t living on the Death Star. Isn’t that also an act of terrorism against the hundreds of thousands of people who died there? Did they not have families? I see how people can point to examples that make themselves feel they’re right. And when you feel in your bones that you’re supported by a higher power on top of that, and you’re morally right, there’s no limit to what you’ll do to make sure that you win. Both sides feel this way."
‘The Last Jedi’ features ‘Star Wars’ legend Mark Hamill reprising his role as Jedi Master Luke Skywalker – who was seen briefly in the 2015’s ‘The Force Awakens’ – as well as the late Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa.
The cast also includes Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Andy Serkis (Snoke) and Domhnall Gleeson (General Lux).
‘The Last Jedi’ hits cinemas this December.
