Elbow cover The Beatles for John Lewis Christmas advert

Elbow have covered The Beatles’ ‘Golden Slumbers’ for the 2017 John Lewis Christmas advert.
The ‘One Day Like This’ group’s frontman Guy Garvey has provided the vocals on the track, which was originally penned by Sir Paul McCartney after he came across the score for the soothing 17th century children’s song ‘Cradle Song’ at his father’s house in Liverpool, for the high street store’s annual campaign.
Guy’s dulcet tones can be heard over a farting and snoring monster as the tale of seven-year-old Joe, who strikes up an unlikely friendship with the seven-foot beast called Moz, who keeps him up all night snoring, unfolds.
McCartney, 75, couldn’t read the sheet music at the time because he was so young, so he ended up making up his own version of the lullaby.
Eventually, the song was recorded by the ‘Let It Be’ rockers in July 1969, when the group’s late singer and songwriter John Lennon was added as a co-writer on the track, which appeared on their LP ‘Abbey Road’ as part of a medley with ‘Carry That Weight’ and ‘The End’.
It’s the second time a Beatles hit has been used for the annual festive commercial, as Tom Odell covered ‘Real Love’ in 2014.
The song was written by Lennon in the 70s, but was released in early 1995 with additional recordings from the three surviving Beatles, McCartney, Ringo Starr and the late George Harrison – who died in 2002 – for ‘The Beatles Anthology’ project.
At present, it’s the last ever recording of new material The Beatles released as a band.
The ‘Another Love’ hitmaker was the soundtrack to the story of Monty the penguin, who goes tobogganing with a young boy.
Last year, electronic pop group Vaults put their own spin on Randy Crawford’s 1980 jazz hit ‘One Day I’ll Fly Away’.
The likes of Ellie Goulding, Aurora and Lily Allen have all recorded covers for the advert in the past.
