Taika Waititi wants to make Black Widow movie

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ director Taika Waititi wants to tackle a Black Widow standalone movie.
The 42-year-old filmmaker is currently working on the upcoming third instalment of Marvel’s series surrounding the Norse God, played by Chris Hemsworth, but he has admitted he’d "love" to put his mark on any of the MCU franchises, including creating the first standalone movie for female hero Black Widow, who is played in the ‘Avengers’ ensemble movies by Scarlett Johansson.
He said: "In all honesty, I reckon I could probably bring something pretty unique to any of the franchises. So, I’d love to see Black Widow. [I’d like to see] Black Widow as something crazy and a bit funnier than we expect it to be. Because we know her story and it’s very sullen and very dark and her history is very dark. But! What’s the funny version of that? What’s the more entertaining version of that?"
Waititi admits he always "goes for the underdog" and believes he has what it takes to bring Black Widow’s back story – which has been hinted at briefly in the ‘Avengers’ movies but never explored fully in film – to audiences.
He added to io9: "I really go for the underdog. [And] I think there’s a way in with any of the characters. You just have to find it and find what honours what’s already there with the source material but also brings it into a more entertaining form for the audience."
The director isn’t the only one who wants to bring a Black Widow solo movie to life either, as Scarlett, 32, previously said she "often" speaks to Marvel about the idea.
Speaking last year, Scarlett said: "I talked to them about it often. It would have to fit in the idea of where they want to go. I’m invested in that character. Marvel is greatly invested in that character. If I did it, I’d have to do it while I still actually wanted to wear a skin-tight catsuit. I don’t know how much longer that’s going to be.
"I would like for it to happen under the right circumstances. I think there’s a lot of opportunity to mine that story line. She’s got a really rich origins story. There’s a lot of places you can go – you can bring it back to Russia. You could explore the Widow program. There’s all kinds of stuff that you could do with it. You could really uncover the identity of who this person is, where she comes from and where she’s part of."
