Simon Gregson doesn’t want another Coronation Street wedding

Simon Gregson doesn’t want another ‘Coronation Street’ wedding.
The 42-year-old actor’s alter ego Steve McDonald is set to propose to Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) but, having seen his character tie the knot five times in the past – to Vicky Arden, Karen Phillips, Becky Granger, Tracy Barlow and Michelle Connor – the soap stalwart has admitted he hates filming the scenes so he’d rather not have a sixth wife.
Asked if he wants another marital ceremony, he said: "No, they’re not fun to film. There are just too many people involved in a small space and they take days to film – so no, I’d prefer him not to marry again.
"And they’ve always filmed the ones I’ve been involved in during the winter months."
Simon admitted both he and Jane were stunned to learn Steve was going to propose to Leanne, but after doing one scene where the pair – who have a baby son, Oliver, together – were living together, they understood how it could work, even though there’s nothing romantic between them.
Simon said: "It came completely out of the blue, so Jane and I were wondering where it had come from. But then after doing one scene and having a laugh, we could see the dynamic of where the pair might go.
"But there’s no sexual chemistry between them – it worked once, obviously, but it isn’t really there, which is going to make it tricky."
However, the actor thinks Leanne could be the one who Steve finally finds happiness with.
He told Heat magazine: "I think it will go quite well, purely because we enjoy working with each other so much.
"I think that shows and comes across in the scenes, so there’s a lot of scope for them in the future.
"It’s about time Steve had some happiness – maybe this could be it."
