Coronation Street’s Nathan to go to jail

Chris Harper has confirmed his evil ‘Coronation Street’ alter ego, Nathan Curtis, will go to jail.
The 39-year-old actor joined the soap six months ago for a hard-hitting child grooming storyline, but he already knows the end is in sight for character as bosses want justice for his victim, Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon).
He said: "He’s spiralling towards his sticky end. I don’t think we’ll see them in court and he’ll end up in prison.
"We wanted to show it’s worth victims telling people. It was also important to show that victims can be so manipulated, they don’t even realise they’re being abused."
Though the actor will be sad to leave as Nathan has been such a strong role, he thinks it’s only right he departs Weatherfield for a life behind bars.
He told OK! magazine: "I’ve loved being a part of it and this has been the best part to play, but I want Nathan to meet a gruesome end."
Both Chris and co-star Lucy have met with victims of abuse, and through them understood how important it is for justice to be served.
Chris explained: "One of the first people we met was a girl who suffered a horrible series of abuse during her teens, who’s now a campaigner for the NSPCC.
"The Crown Prosecution Service were unable to proceed with her case, so she’s never got justice, so we asked her what she’d like to happen to Nathan. We said would you like him to disappear? And she just stopped us and said, ‘I want to see him go down.’ "
Despite winning praise for his portrayal of menacing Nathan, Chris and ‘Corrie’ bosses felt it was important not to submit him for consideration for soap awards as it could send the wrong message about his character.
He said: "We made the decision not ot put him forward for Villain of the Year at the British Soap Awards because it didn’t feel right to celebrate Nathan as a character."
