Bastille’s Dan Smith’s ‘awkward’ chat with Katy Perry

Bastille’s Dan Smith had an "awkward" encounter with Katy Perry at the BRIT Awards last night (22.02.17).
The ‘Good Grief’ singer didn’t want to miss out on the chance to speak with the 32-year-old pop superstar at the ceremony at London’s The O2 arena, but the shy rocker had no idea what to speak to her about and ended up scaring her off by telling her an Alan Partridge joke.
Speaking to the BBC at the star-studded ceremony, the 30-year-old musician shared: "We just bumped into Katy Perry, which isn’t your every day thing.
"Having to have a conversation with her, I was really awkward and everyone was shouting ‘Dan’ so I tried to make an Alan Partridge joke and I think it went a little bit over her head."
The ‘Rise’ singer performed her latest single ‘Chained to the Rhythm’ for the second only time last night, and it wasn’t without any blips as she had people inside of houses parading the stage and one accidentally fell off into the crowd.
However, this year wasn’t as bad as the blonde beauty’s first ever performance at the BRITs.
The ‘Dark Horse’ hitmaker was suffering from the flu when she made her debut at the British music ceremony in London in 2009, and was hurled up over the loo for ages before being found by Australian pop beauty Natalia Imbruglia and going on stage to collect her award for International Female Solo Artist.
She recently spilled: "The first time I went to the BRITs I had a flu of maybe 102, and I was so sick and I walked the carpet and they were like ‘You can’t go home’ as they knew I was gonna win, and I was like, ‘Why am I here, I’m literally dying’.
"I went to the girls bathroom and went under a credenza and Natalie Imbruglia pulled up the curtain and was like, ‘Are you alright babe?’ and I was shivering with cold sweats and was like, ‘I’m supposed to be here at the BRITs, I think I’m getting an award.
"I had to stay and get the award and I just went straight to bed. it was tragic, it was my only connection with the BRITs."
