Sturgill Simpson: Frank Ocean deserves my Grammy nomination

Sturgill Simpson thinks Frank Ocean is more deserving of his Grammy Album of The Year nomination.
The 38-year-old country singer will compete with Adele, Justin Bieber, Beyonce and Drake for the prestigious accolade at the ceremony on February 12, but he thinks the 29-year-old rapper should have received a nod for his critically-acclaimed LP ‘Blonde’. In an interview with The New York Times, he said: "I loved ‘Lemonade.’ I thought it was genius. I love the Adele record. I really, really wish, honestly, and no [expletive] — I would’ve liked to see Frank Ocean’s name where mine is. But that’s not my place to say. I totally understand [his protest]. I just thought that record [‘Blonde’] was really groundbreaking. I listen to just about everything except country music, so it’s strange."
The ‘In Bloom’ hitmaker, whose album ‘A Sailor’s Guide to Earth’ is up for the prize, finds the nomination "extremely humbling" and to celebrate he simply made pancakes and watched TV with his son.
Asked how he found out, he said: "[My publicist] woke me up. My wife said, ‘Who the [expletive] is calling you at 7:30?’ She told me the news and we just kind of stayed in bed for a while. I was trying to wrap my head around what this even means and looking back on everything. It’s extremely humbling. I went downstairs and made pancakes and watched ‘Sesame Street’ with my son. That was pretty much it."
Frank didn’t submit ‘Blonde’ for consideration at the Grammys because he finds the system "dated".
He failed to put forward his record in time for consideration at next year’s glitzy award show, a decision he made in protest of the ceremony failing to "represent" people who come from his background.
The ‘Novacane’ hitmaker previously said: "That institution certainly has nostalgic importance. It just doesn’t seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down.
"I think the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated. I’d rather this be my Colin Kaepernick moment for the Grammys than sit there in the audience."
