Mel Gibson: Fury Road is spectacular

Mel Gibson is a fan of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ and thinks the action film was "visually spectacular".
The 60-year-old actor was catapulted to worldwide fame when he was cast by director George Miller as vigilante Max Rockatansky in 1979’s ‘Mad Max’ movie and he went on to reprise the role in two sequels, working with George on all three films.
George returned to the character 36 years after the original for 2015’s fourth film which saw Tom Hardy replace Mel as the titular anti-hero and although the franchise moved on without him the ‘Lethal Weapon’ star is a big admirer of what the pair did with the movie.
Speaking about ‘Fury Road’, Mel said: "It’s visually spectacular, that edit was so good. It’s crazy, but that’s George, you know, he’s a scientist, he’s the Einstein of edit and being able to get the pieces necessary to make a truly compelling action, in your face action sequence. He was always like that."
In his later career, Mel himself moved behind the camera to make critically acclaimed films such as ‘Braveheart’, ‘The Passion of the Christ’ and ‘Apocalypto’ and he remembered the lessons he had learned from George to bring his own visions to the big screen
In an interview with Collider.com, he explained: "I remember doing stuff with him and I didn’t even understand what he was doing, he said just get the camera at a low angle and just whip it around over your shoulder and just look down on top of the mountain box, so there’s this camera on the ground and I’m like, ‘Whoa.’ "
Mel’s next directorial project is biographical World War II film ‘Hacksaw Ridge’, which comes out in November, and he has more movies ready to go, all of which he wrote when he was ostracised from Hollywood after he was arrested for drink driving in July 2006, an incident which saw him make anti-Semitic remarks to the arresting officer in his drunken stupor.
He said: "There were four things I wrote in the 10-year hiatus which I think I would really like to do but no-one has coughed up the funding yet."
‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ was released in May 2015 and has since made over $378 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film in the ‘Mad Max’ franchise.
As well as Hardy the movie also starred Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa and Nicholas Hoult as Nux.
