Gemma Arterton admits it’s ‘easier to conform’ in Hollywood

Gemma Arterton thinks life is easier for women in Hollywood if they choose to "conform and shut up".
The 30-year-old British actress has been an ouspoken critic against the objectification of women in the movie business and freely concedes that some people will choose not to work with her because she is seen to be "difficult".
She explained: "It’s easier to conform and shut up. That’s the way it’s always been with women. Easier than putting yourself out there and having an opinion, to which someone might retaliate.
"I’m sure there are people who don’t want to work with me because they think I’m difficult – ‘one of those feminist girls’ – but to be honest with you I don’t want to work with them. And that’s fine. Now."
However, Gemma conceded that in the early stages of her career, she lacked the confidence to speak out on the issue.
She told the Observer newspaper: "When I started talking about how I didn’t enjoy parts of my job, and talking about body image, I got in trouble. So I stopped."
But Gemma claims there has been a broad sea change in recent years and she is excited to see people being more outspoken and combative.
The actress said: "A revolution is happening, but in its own quiet English way, because people work f**king hard, and it’s hard to live, and everyone’s had enough of being f**ked over.
"Look at [retailer] Philip Green – people are angry at the moment, and now they’re being encouraged to pipe up. It’s an exciting time."
