Susan Sarandon: Selfies make us self-conscious

Susan Sarandon feels the selfie-obsessed world we live in makes everyone "self-conscious".
The 69-year-old actress says there is a real sense of disconnect with social media and the pressures to look a certain way, which is only amplified by having to maintain an online profile.
She said: "I think the whole culture with selfies and all of this business has made us more and more self-conscious and less and less attached to our tribe."
The ‘Thelma & Louise’ actress loves to interact with people in real life but can’t understand why every time she enters a room people turn to their phones to tell people she’s there.
She said: "I love talking to people that I meet, that I’m important to for whatever reason. That might seem somewhat artificial, but I don’t mind. I don’t find that a burden at all. But what’s interesting is that now when I enter a room … everybody picks up their phone and starts saying that I’m there."
The flame-haired beauty isn’t bothered about people stopping and staring at her in the street but is more concerned with people who use their phones.
She added to Irish Tatler magazine: "I don’t necessarily think I deserve it more than someone else. When you go to a place where that doesn’t happen, you’re still affected by it because now you’re noticing that it’s not there."
Meanwhile, Susan previously revealed she’s a big supporter of social media if it "gives people the opportunity to love who they are".
She said: "I think that anything that gives people the opportunity to love who they are and to maintain their self-esteem is important. It’s very important to not have beauty defined so narrowly, because it cuts into people’s self-image."
