Tom Hanks thinks Emma Watson is a "fascinating" and "dedicated" person.
The 59-year-old actor was approached by the ‘Harry Potter’ star to speak on behalf of the HeForShe campaign, which encourages men to take an active stance for gender equality, and has praised her for her relentless commitment to the cause.
During an interview conducted by Emma – who stars alongside Tom in forthcoming sci-fi movie ‘The Circle’ – the 25-year-old actress asked him why he had agreed to support her cause, to which he sweetly replied: "I find Emma Watson as fascinating as she is accomplished. Time spent with someone as dedicated and as smart as she is, to me, is time well spent."
The two-time Oscar winner strongly believes that women shouldn’t be cast solely as mothers or sex symbols in film, because it lessens the "art" of movie-making and the humanity of the character.
He explained to Emma during an interview for Esquire magazine: "The art form of cinema becomes less of an art, and no longer holds the mirror up to nature when women are reduced to being only hot or nurturing … when rules of gender and character dictate what stories are told and by whom, when women are required to be only hot or only nurturing, they no longer are full dimensional humans. That’s not art, and it brings less enlightenment to the world."
