Keith Emerson has died.
The rock legend – who is arguably most well known as part of progressive rock supergroup Emerson, Lake and Palmer – has sadly passed away at the age of 71.
A post on the band’s official Facebook page reads: "We regret to announce that Keith Emerson died last night (10.03.16) at his home in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, aged 71. We ask that the family’s privacy and grief be respected."
The late star inspired and captivated fans as the keyboardist of the group, whilst also being known for his many solo albums and his time with The Nice in the 60s.
In a statement, bandmate Carl Palmer said: "I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my good friend and brother-in-music Keith Emerson. Keith was a gentle soul whose love for music and passion for his performance as a keyboard player will remain unmatched for many years to come.
"He was a pioneer and an innovator whose musical genius touched all of us in the worlds of rock, classical and jazz. I will always remember his warm smile, good sense of humour, compelling showmanship and dedication to his musical craft."
The group last performed together in 2010, with their final concert taking place at London’s High Voltage Festival to mark 40 years since the group was founded.
