Tom Hardy dedicates Oscar nomination to The Revenant team

Tom Hardy has dedicated his Oscar nomination to the crew that made ‘The Revenant’.

The 41-year-old actor is up for the Best Supporting Actor prize at the Academy Awards, while the movie leads the way with nominations earning 12.

Hardy is thrilled to be recognised for his own performance but says his nomination is down to the "team" behind the project, including director Alejandro G. Iñárritu.

The cast of the movie – which is a semi-biographical story of survival and revenge in the American wilderness in 1823 – have been vocal about the harsh filming conditions which included several months working in sub-zero temperatures.

Speaking at the European premiere of ‘The Revenant’ in London on Thursday night (13.01.16), Hardy – who plays adventurer John Fitzgerald who betrays Leonardo DiCaprio’s frontiersman Hugh Glass – said: "The nomination is for everybody that was in the cold, everyone who was in the wet. The film has been picked for them ultimately."

Asked what first attracted him to the project, the 38-year-old star referred to Sean Penn pulling out of the film and joked: "It was a number of things, Leo called me, because Sean Penn wasn’t available. The script, the director."

Hardy was delighted to have a strong "team" to work with in DiCaprio and Iñárritu and said the director had a "smorgasbord" of ideas on set.

He added: "To be part of his team, I would facilitate whatever it is that he needs and it’s a pleasure to do that for somebody who has got a smorgasbord of options that they’ve already come up with, that they’re feeding you and you them.

"It’s wonderful to watch him (Leonardo) create and orchestrate himself on screen and also that carries through the entire ensemble. It’s just lovely to be a team with somebody like that."

Hardy and DiCaprio were joined on the red carpet at the premiere by his co-stars, including Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter and Paul Alexander.

Hardy also played the lead role in ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ which has received 10 nominations at the Academy Awards.
