Adele on how happiness has changed song meanings

Adele’s partner Simon Konecki has changed the meaning of her song ‘Someone Like You’.

The 27-year-old singer released the heartbreaking ballad in 2011, after writing it following the break up of a difficult relationship.

But as she performed in front of a sell out audience in New York on Monday night (14.12.15) while recording her NBC special ‘Adele: Live in New York City’, the singer told the crowd she is now in a happier place than ever before thanks to her boyfriend and their two-year-old son Angelo.

Before performing ‘Someone Like You’, Adele said: "I don’t sing this from the same place anymore. I sing it from an amazing place because of my man who is here tonight – and I love you – and this is the first show that he’s ever seen me do!"

The concert special is the latest proof that Adele is well and truly back on top form following a break from the industry after vocal surgery and the birth of her son.

However, she told the audience that the operation she had on her vocal chords has actually affected the way she delivers her songs.

Prior to her performance of ‘All I Ask’, Adele said: "It is, it’s f***ing, it’s really hard to sing," she tried to sell the crowd, who just weren’t buying it. "I had vocal surgery and then suddenly I could sing higher, I could sing lower, I could do whatever you wanted me to do. As soon as I’m in front of you lot, I just f**k myself."

But it was her rendition of ‘When We Were Young’, which has now been confirmed as the second single to be taken off her best selling album ’25’, that caused the most emotional response from Adele.

Struggling to hold back her tears, Adele said: "I’ve honestly missed you all so much. Oh, I think I did quite well with not crying until now. Thank you so much for coming. I feel like this is the start now.

"Before the show, I was like, ‘I just want it to be over,’ because I was so nervous and I’ve managed to remember every moment from this show, which is a first for me. I normally get so nervous that I blank out but I remembered every moment, and I’ll never forget it."
