Paul Weller: I want to prolong my music career

Paul Weller wants to "prolong" his music career.

The 57-year-old rocker admits he’s never had so much "freedom" over his work before and while he’s able to make music he’s never going to be ready to retire.

Asked how long he can keep up being a musician, he said: "I think about that all the time: when would be a good time to retire? But I love it so much, I don’t know what else I’d do. I’m not really after anything more than finding a way to prolong this, to keep playing and making music.

"I’m in control of this, and I like that. As it is, I can continue to express myself with something I love doing. I get freedom now, which isn’t something I ever really had before.

"The label asks me to do press and TV, that’s fine, but they don’t tell me what to write or release. If you are successful, you get left alone."

However, Weller – who recently visited the West Coast of America – says the touring aspect of his career is harder now he’s older and if he was given the chance to tour for a long-period he doesn’t know if he’s got "the stamina" anymore.

He told the US edition of Uncut magazine: "If I had to do a two-or-three month tour of the States – that’s hard work, especially at my age. I don’t know if I have the stamina."
