Wartime heroes honoured by Prince William

Britain’s Prince William honoured Lincolnshire’s wartime heroes today (22.09.15).

The 33-year-old royal has spent the day at RAF Coningsby and watched the 100th anniversary parade of 29 (Reserve) Squadron, as part of a number of events that will mark the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Briatin.

The RAF band played the National Anthem and a quartet of Tornado jets flew overhead in formation during a presentation for the prince earlier this morning.

The Duke of Cambridge was then treated to a 45 minute cruise in Dakota, a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight jet, as well as a lunch at the hangar with veteran pilots and aircrew this afternoon.

The BBMF is the RAF’s tribute to the aviators of World War Two and flies several Spitfires, two Hurricanes, a Dakota and a Lancaster.

29 (Reserve) Squadron trains pilots on how to operate the multi-role Typhoon aircraft which fly from RAF Coningsby.

The base also delivers Quick Reaction Alert (South) which means the Typhoons can be launched at short notice if a potential threat to UK airspace is detected.

Back in July Prince William – who is the Honorary Air Commandant of the Lincolnshire base – joined the East Anglian Air Ambulance as a pilot and before that he served as a pilot with the RAF Search and Rescue Force in Wales.
