One Direction win MTV’s Hottest Summer Superstar Award

One Direction have won MTV’s Hottest Summer Superstar Award for the third consecutive year.

The four-piece boyband – featuring Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson – amassed a total of 94,291,338 votes from members of the public to be crowned the winners of the online poll.

After being announced as the winners, they said: "Hi everybody, thank you so much for voting us in MTV Hottest, we won WOO."

The total number of votes doubled compared to 2014’s competition, with 635,824,505 votes being cast in total by fans in an effort to support their favourite acts.

One Direction – who released their first single since Zayn Malik left the band, ‘Drag Me Down’, last month – were neck-and-neck with Justin Bieber for the majority of the poll, with fierce competition also coming from Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Demi Lovato and 5 Seconds of Summer.

Despite the fact it is the third year they have won the accolade, the group recently revealed they will go on hiatus next year, meaning they may not have the same success in 2016.

Confirming the news, Niall tweeted: "We are not splitting up, but we will be taking a well earned break at some point next year

"Don’t worry though, we still have lots we want to achieve ! Can’t wait for you to hear all the new music we have for you and to perform (sic)."

The full list of winners will be revealed in ‘MTV’s Hottest Summer Superstar: The Results’ which will be broadcast at 1pm on Saturday (29.08.15) on MTV Music.
