Natalie Dormer’s pigeonhole fear

Natalie Dormer vowed not to wear corsets so she wouldn’t be "pigeonholed".

The 33-year-old actress has been restricted by the tight garments in her roles as Margaery Tyrell in ‘Game of Thrones’ and Anne Boleyn in ‘The Tudors’ but decided she didn’t want to only be known only for starring in period dramas so decided to avoid them at all costs.

She said: "I’d made a small pledge to myself to keep away from corsets for a bit, because I didn’t want to be pigeonholed."

However, she was soon offered the role of Seymour Worsley in BBC TV movie ‘The Scandalous Lady W’ about an 18th century sex scandal and couldn’t resist the role because it is such a shocking tale, so gave up her self-imposed ban.

She explained: "You read the real-life details and find yourself saying, ‘She did what? He did what to her?’ I was just intrigued. And then I thought, you know, I could manage three weeks in a corset again. This is worth it. I’d like to tell Seymour’s story."

But Natalie is unhappy with being associated with only one genre as she has starred in so many non-period dramas including playing a lawyer in ‘Silk’, Moriarty in ‘Elementary’ and Cressida in ‘The Hunger Games’ – the final installment of which will hit cinema screens in November.

She told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: "Look at my contemporaries – say, Keira Knightley, who played the Duchess of Devonshire [in ‘The Duchess’], a contemporary of Lady Worsley, and Anna Karenina. She has played four or five historical characters. And I really haven’t. It’s weird, people’s perceptions of me. It seems disproportionate of me being in costume drama."
