Britain’s Princess Diana’s security guard shares special duties

Britain’s Princess Diana’s security guard Richard Lett shared how his "heart really reached out" to Prince William and Harry when Diana died.

The royal security guard – who has served the Royal family for more than 20 years – shared what it was like looking after the young Princes in the aftermath of her death in 1997.

He said: "I was looking after William and Harry in the aftermath of that. You can imagine it was a tough time for those two young men – my heart really reached out to them. Not only was the nation dealing with the thoughts of losing an icon on one level, but on another she was their mother."

Richard was also in charge of the protection of Prince William and Catherine the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding back in 2011 and remembered thinking "Crikey, I’m just a few feet away and this is history".

He recalled: "I just kept thinking, My goodness, I’m here, this is real. Crikey, I’m just a few feet away and this is history."

"It was just an amazing opportunity. How many would love to do that job, right?"

Asked about the life of a Royal, Richard said it’s "a really tough goldfish bowl to live in"

He told the Guardian newspaper: "It’s a really tough goldfish bowl to live in. It’s an amazing life that you lead, but the tradeoff is you have no anonymity, the tradeoff is that you become public property."
