Hannah New relishes challenging stereotypes in Black Sails

Hannah New loves that her ‘Black Sails’ character challenges gender stereotypes.

The 31-year-old actress – who stars as saloon owner Eleanor Guthrie in the adventure TV series – has revealed how much she relishes playing someone who’s distinct from most females in period programmes.

Speaking exclusively to BANG Showbiz, Hannah explained: "Eleanor is unlike any other female character you see in pirate dramas. She’s grown up in a very tough situation and that’s made her a strong woman, the sort you really see on screen.

"I really enjoyed the opportunity to play someone like Eleanor, who wasn’t afraid to stand up to male pirates."

What’s more, Hannah said the show – which is a prequel to the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel ‘Treasure Island’ – offers an interesting depiction of the relationship between male and female pirates in the 18th century.

She reflected: "The women in ‘Black Sails’ aren’t typical of how they’re often portrayed in literature.

"In some senses, they have no choice to be strong and independent – and to stand their ground.

"And I think it’s brave that the show is willing to take the risk of showing female characters in this way. I think she’s a very interesting character to play."

‘Black Sails’ premieres tonight (14.07.15) at 10pm on HISTORY.
