Pharrell Williams describes ‘The Voice US’ as ‘heavy and emotional’

Pharrell Williams tries to "guide" contestants on ‘The Voice’ as much as he can.

The ‘Happy’ hitmaker – who has been a coach on the US version of the show for the past two years – claims he’s not bothered about mentoring a winner but instead wants to offer the best possible advice he can.

Speaking to KISS FM UK at the Isle of Wight Festival, he said: "It’s not about the competition for me, it’s about the cool artists that come on the show. Those young really intense talents that come across the show. I refer to them as artists. It’s about guiding them the best that I can. It’s emotional and it’s heavy but they’re trusting you so you’ve got to give them the best advice that you can."

The 42-year-old star’s comments come after he claimed the majority of contestants who appear on talent shows won’t make it in the music industry.

He told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "99% of people who have been on these shows don’t find success even if they win.

"That’s what contestants have to come to terms with. This is not the be all and end all, this is the spring board, it’s not the pool. I spend most of my time reminding them this is a pit stop for you."
