Britain’s Queen Elizabeth opened the new session of parliament in London earlier today (27.05.15).
The 89-year-old monarch – who’s performed the task every year of her reign except 1959 and 1963, when she was pregnant – made a speech to mark the formal opening of parliament for 2015, which is of particular importance as it heralds the start of a new government.
Queen Elizabeth arrived at the Houses of Parliament through the Sovereign Entrance, where she put on the Imperial State Crown and Robe of State.
Thereafter, she led a procession through the Royal Gallery into the chamber of the House of Lords.
Members of the House of Commons joined those from the House of Lords to listen to the Queen’s Speech, which – as tradition dictates – is actually written for her by the government.
The Queen’s exit marked the start of a new parliamentary session and the politicians returned to their work.
