Duchess of Cornwall ‘thrilled’ to be in Ireland

The Duchess of Cornwall tried a "deceptively strong" cocktail named in her own honour while visiting Ireland.

The 67-year-old wife of Prince Charles was in Galway for the launch of the Taste of the Wild Atlantic Way Food Festival, and warned that the cocktail – created by mixologist Aileen Cunningham – was "deceptively strong", as it was made up of Irish Dingle Gin, elderflower liqueur, Mumm Champagne and Irish spring water infused with rosemary and orange.

Camilla said: "Slainte. That packs a bit of a punch! You’ll need to sip it slowly as it is deceptively strong. Delicious though!"

The visit was her second of the day and came after she visited Claddagh National School to meet students taking part in a literacy support programme.

The Duchess greeted locals with the Gaelic phrase "dia daoibh" which translates as ‘God be with you’, and told the school she was "thrilled" to be in Ireland – one of her "favourite places in the world" – and was given a bouquet by Charlotte Elizabeth Curran who was celebrating her ninth birthday.

The King of the Claddagh Michael Lynskey said he was "proud as punch" to have her visiting their fishing community.

The 84-year-old Irishman said: "I’m all over the wall, proud as punch. It’s a tremendous honour for the school

"We are proud community here and honoured to host the Duchess. Any school in Ireland would have love to have her here, so the fact that she has come to Galway is tremendous."
