Prince Carl Philip of Sweden and Sofia Hellqvist have announced they will be getting married on 13 June.
At a traditional church service in Stockholm yesterday (17.05.15), the pair confirmed their impending nuptials, and also revealed that the former model and reality TV star will receive the title of princess.
The service is a public announcement of an upcoming marriage that was originally meant to allow anyone to raise objections to the nuptials, and was brought to Sweden in 1200.
The practice stopped being obligatory in Sweden in 1969, although it is still adhered to by the Royal Family. The services were held before the marriage of Crown Princess Victoria and Daniel as well as before Madeleine and Christopher O’Neill’s wedding.
Prince Carl – who is third in line to the throne and the last of his siblings to get married – has been dating Sofia since 2009, after meeting at a club in Stureplan, Stockholm, and have been living together on the island of Djurgarden since 2011.
The relationship sparked outrage from the royal family when they first got together, as Sofia had hit headlines four years earlier in 2005 after reaching the finale of ‘Paradise Hotel’, a TV show which sees five men and five women stay in a hotel together and included scenes of Sofia kissing pornstar Jenna Jameson.
