Prince Charles mocks ‘ranga’ Harry

Britain’s Prince Charles joked about his "ranga" son Prince Harry yesterday (30.04.15).

The 30-year-old royal is currently on a month-long military secondment in Australia and his father thinks he has settled into the country well and is sure he is "happy" because of the local people’s "fondness" for red-heads, for which ranga is a local slang term.

He said: "I suspect my old Harry is pretty well acclimatised by now and will probably be eating lamingtons, Vegemite sandwiches, Iced VoVos and Violet Crumble bars – and may even be threatening to buy a pair of budgie smugglers.

"Whatever the case, I am sure he’ll be happy Down Under because of the Aussies’ fondness for rangas."

On a more serious note, Charles – who was speaking after touring the Indigenous Australia: Enduring Civilisation exhibition at the British museum – felt his son may, like him, have been captivated by the deep spiritual relationship that indigenous Australians have with the land "which is part of their being in every sense".

The exhibition is the first major UK show to present a history of indigenous Australia through objects and the 66-year-old royal hopes it will inspire people to "regain that sense of reverence for the natural environment".

He said: "My great hope is that exhibitions of this kind can help build a bridge to enable indigenous and non-indigenous people to communicate with, and understand, one another more effectively.

"If it can also inspire us to regain that sense of reverence for the natural environment, which is so much a part of the innate wisdom of all indigenous communities around the world, then perhaps it will have helped us all to learn to be better custodians of the planet."
