Peter Davison: Capaldi’s part of Doctor Who club

Peter Davison says Peter Capaldi has been welcomed into the "exclusive" ‘Doctor Who club by the men who played the Time Lord before him.

The 64-year-old actor – who portrayed the titular character for three years from 1981 to 1984 – has met up with current Doctor Capaldi and he’s proud the Scottish star is now part of a very elite group of actors to have took control of the TARDIS.

Speaking to BANG Showbiz, Davison said: "I did get to interview Peter when he was in the middle of making (his first series) which was very interesting. We, the Doctors, do meet each other at fan events and other things – I obviously meet up with some Doctors more than others. It is a very exclusive club that we’re all in."

When asked what the all the Doctors speak about when they see each other, Davison laughed: "Well we don’t talk about the intricacies of time travel or anything like that!"

Before adding: "We certainly share experiences of what it’s like to be Doctor Who and how that affects your life in general. That comes into the conversation a lot, but we don’t discuss the ins and outs of any particular thing."

Fifth Doctor Davison – whose son-in-law David Tennant portrayed the Tenth Doctor – watched Capaldi’s first series in the role last year and admits he has loved his interpretation of the character and enthusiasm for the part.

He said: "I’ve watched nearly all of Peter’s episodes, I think he’s a great Doctor, I love him.

"I love him because he’s a big fan of the series. I enjoy his take on it which is, ‘Is the human race actually worth bothering with?’ For the humans it’s like, ‘What have we done to deserve him paying us any attention at all?’ It’s an interesting take on it."

Davison will soon be seen acting as the presenter of ‘The Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular’.

The production showcases the evocative and thrilling music written by composer Murray Gold for the BBC One sci-fi series since 2005 and features over 100 performers including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

Davison will be responsible for introducing the music and will also have to deal with several of the Doctor’s enemies, including the Daleks, the Cybermen and the Silence, and he admits he can’t wait to get on stage and have some "fun" with the audience.

He said: "We will have a bit of fun with the Daleks and a bit of interaction with Ben Foster who is the wildly enthusiastic conductor of proceedings. I give him a bit of a hard time and insult him a little bit, but we have a lot of fun and the audience join in the spirit of it. It’s not a tough job, it’s a very enjoyable job and I’m very happy to be doing it."

‘The Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular’ starts on Saturday May 23 at the The SSE Arena in London.
