Countess of Wessex to celebrate Jersey’s 70th anniversary

Britain’s Sophie, Countess of Wessex will visit Jersey to mark the island’s Liberation Day.

The 50-year-old royal will help locals to celebrate the island’s 70th anniversary of independence on May 9 by attending a community event at People’s Park, which kicks off at 11.30am with the annual Slave Workers’ Memorial Service at Westmount, the Jersey Evening Post newspaper reports.

The traditional flag-raising ceremony will take place at the Pomme d’Or as usual followed by a grand parade from Liberation Square to the People’s Park.

A ceremony is then scheduled to take place before a tea party and food fair with entertainment in the afternoon continuing into the evening.

The Countess – who has children Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn with her husband Prince Edward – last visited Jersey in 2010 when she met with children from the Rouge Bouillon School.

The blonde beauty is also set to visit the neighbouring island of Guernsey as part of her trip.

Meanwhile, Princess Anne is scheduled to visit Jersey in March, ahead of her sister-in-law.
