Billy Bob Thornton to play Making a Murderer’s Steven Avery?

Billy Bob Thornton is tipped to play Steven Avery in a movie adaptation of ‘Making a Murderer’.

The 60-year-old actor is favourite to play the accused murder suspect, whose story has been retold by Netflix in one of the most talked about documentary series of recent times.

Steven was exonerated after spending nearly two decades in prison for a crime he did not commit, and filed suit against his jailors, but shortly afterwards he was accused of the murder of 25-year-old photographer named Teresa Halbach.

And chances of Billy landing the role currently stand at 9/2, according to odds given by Irish bookmaker BoyleSports, though he also faces competition from ‘Pineapple Express’ actor Danny McBride.

Aoife Heffron, from BoyleSports said: "It is clear the world has been gripped by the case of Teresa Halbach and Steven Avery and a motion picture seems likes the next port of call given the success of the Netflix series with Danny McBride and Billy Bob Thornton early favourites to play Steven.

"’Making A Murderer’ had everyone glued to their screens as they tried to figure out if Steven Avery was innocent or guilty."

If industry insiders are to be believed, the Netflix series could be turned into a film for release by 2020.

‘The Hateful Eight’s Jeff Bridges is also in the running with 9/1 odds.

Meanwhile, 58-year-old Daniel Day Lewis, John Travolta and Sean Penn are listed, although they’re outsiders with just a 50/1 shot.
